Happy 4th of July Friends!
It’s been hot here in Colorado so the Goose and I have been enjoying the air conditioning in our apartment. But enjoying the A/C comes at a hefty price… preschooler boredom. So I had to come up with a fun craft that I knew would get her excited. She absolutely LOVES wands of all sorts. She will carry a used paper towel roll around for a week saying it’s a wand. So we whipped up a couple firework inspired wands for the 4th of July and a special princess wand.
Supply List:
We purchased all of our supplies at the Hobby Lobby. I had to hunt around the store for these wooden sticks because I did not want to go to the hardware store. This was supposed to be an easy craft. Easy crafts only require one stop.
- 12″ Wooden Dowels (a.k.a. the wand stick)
- Large Foam Stars – the website does not have the red, blue, white and yellow pack we used, but this is the brand.
- Foam Glitter Star Stickers
- Flag Ribbon
- Stars and Stripes Ribbon
I used other ribbon that I had on hand to make the colorful wand.
How to assemble:
Honestly, assembly of these wands is super easy. It just takes a glue gun and preferably your preschooler distracted by something else after Step 1.
Step 1:
Get your kids involved in this step. Have them decorate the larger foam stars with the glitter star stickers. Tie your hands behind your back if you are tempted (as I am) to reposition the stars. Just make peace with the fact that these will not be perfect.
Step 2:
Take a piece of ribbon and run it from the bottom of the wand, up and over the top, and back down to the other side. Hot glue in place. You’re basically gluing the middle of the ribbon to the top of the wand.
Step 3:
After you have glued all of your smaller ribbon to the wand using the “up and over” method noted above, take your widest ribbon and glue it horizontally around the top of the stick. This will help secure the other layers of ribbon.
Step 4:
Glue one star to the wand. On the opposite side, position the second star to line up with the first star and then glue to the wand. Lastly, glue the points of the stars together to secure.
And finally, enjoy your wands!
These wands are perfect replacements for sparklers for the little ones or make great parade wavers. They can also be made year around for any time your littles want to play magician/fairy/princess/queen/king… you get the point.
